The Caravelle eHybrid reflects that philosophy directly: it lets customers experience the refinement and efficiency of electric mobility on everyday journeys while retaining the flexibility of an advanced turbocharged petrol engine for extended travel.

Preparing Customers for an Electrified Future

Volkswagen Group Africa’s commitment to electrification extends well beyond the products it introduces. Over the past several years, the company has invested in preparing its business, dealer network and customers for the future of mobility. The customer evaluation programme for the Volkswagen ID.4 provided insight into charging behaviour and ownership expectations in South Africa, while the ID. Buzz Cargo pilot programme demonstrated the operational potential of battery electric commercial vehicles in real-world fleet environments.

These programmes have shaped an important principle: successful electrification isn’t achieved simply by introducing new technology, but by ensuring customers understand, trust and confidently embrace it. The Caravelle eHybrid has been developed as a bridge between conventional internal combustion vehicles and future fully electric mobility, introducing customers to electrification in a way that feels familiar and uncompromising.

How Does Charging Work for Everyday Life?

Unlike a battery electric vehicle that relies entirely on external charging infrastructure, the Caravelle eHybrid gives owners complete flexibility. The high-voltage battery can be recharged at home, at the office or via South Africa’s growing network of public charging stations, while the efficient petrol engine remains available for longer journeys.

For most owners, home charging will be the most convenient option. Using an approved AC Wallbox charger, which comes standard with the vehicle, the Caravelle eHybrid can be plugged in overnight and fully charged by morning, allowing many customers to complete their daily commute entirely on electric power. The included 7.4 kW AC Wallbox delivers a charging time of five and a half hours, and the vehicle supports up to 11 kW AC charging for residential and destination charging. For longer trips, 40 kW DC fast charging takes the battery from 10% to 80% in around 26 minutes under optimal conditions, enough for a quick top-up during a coffee stop.

Electrification Without Compromise

At the core of the Caravelle eHybrid’s capability is its 19.7 kWh high-voltage lithium-ion battery, made up of 96 advanced prismatic cells integrated into the vehicle platform. This larger battery allows up to 95 kilometres of all-electric driving, more than sufficient for the daily needs of many South African households.

On longer journeys, the hybrid management system automatically shifts between electric propulsion, petrol power or a combination of both to maximise efficiency, giving the vehicle a combined driving range of up to 700 kilometres. Volkswagen’s regenerative braking system further boosts efficiency by converting kinetic energy from deceleration into electrical energy that continuously replenishes the battery, rather than allowing it to be lost as heat.

Why a Plug-in Hybrid?

New Energy Vehicles span a range of propulsion systems built for different needs. Battery Electric Vehicles run solely on stored electrical energy and require external charging, producing zero exhaust emissions. Conventional Hybrid Electric Vehicles combine a petrol engine with a small electric motor charged through regenerative braking and the combustion engine, improving fuel efficiency but without significant electric-only range.

The Caravelle eHybrid introduces a third option: the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. It combines the strengths of both technologies, letting the high-voltage battery be charged externally while retaining the flexibility of an efficient petrol engine. This means customers can complete many everyday journeys, commuting, school runs, urban driving, entirely on electric power, while still enjoying unrestricted long-distance travel without depending solely on public charging infrastructure.

Driving With All-Wheel Drive

The power distribution of the eHybrid’s 4MOTION system is regulated via Electronic Stability Control and varies depending on driving conditions and axle traction, with up to 100 percent of drive force directed to either the front or rear axle. Electric rear-wheel drive remains available even when the battery is empty, as the TSI engine and front electric motor generate the power needed for the rear-axle drive motor. Permanent all-wheel drive activates when the driver switches to Sport mode or selects Sport in the Individual driving profile, such as on wet surfaces, with the rear axle engaged up to speeds of 130 km/h.

Unlike a conventional all-wheel drive system that relies on a mechanical propshaft connection to the combustion engine, the Caravelle eHybrid’s electrically driven rear axle allows independent, more precise torque distribution and control, particularly on uneven surfaces. Balanced weight distribution, thanks to the battery’s position under the front seats, the tank under the second row, and the second electric motor integrated into the rear axle, further supports traction.

Engineering at the Core

At the heart of the Caravelle eHybrid is Volkswagen’s latest-generation plug-in hybrid powertrain, combining a newly developed 1.5-litre TSI evo2 turbocharged petrol engine producing 130 kW and 250 Nm with a high-performance electric motor integrated into a six-speed DSG transmission. Together, they generate a combined output of 180 kW and 350 Nm, making this the most powerful production Caravelle ever offered in South Africa.

During low-speed urban driving, the Caravelle eHybrid can run entirely on electric power, delivering instant torque, near-silent operation and zero tailpipe emissions. As more performance is needed, the petrol engine joins seamlessly, combining outputs for smooth acceleration without interruption. Sophisticated control software continuously analyses vehicle speed, battery charge, driver inputs, road gradient and power demand to determine the most efficient operating mode automatically.

Premium Standard Features

The Caravelle eHybrid comes well-equipped with premium comfort and convenience features as standard, including three-zone Air Care Climatronic climate control with a rear passenger control panel, a Harman Kardon premium sound system with 13 speakers, 840 watts of output and a dedicated subwoofer, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel with shift paddles, and 30-colour ambient lighting including second-row footwell illumination.

Advanced safety and driver assistance systems include Adaptive Cruise Control, IQ. LIGHT LED Matrix headlamps with Dynamic Light Assist and separate LED daytime running lights, a rear-view camera, Park Assist with front and rear Park Distance Control, and Side Assist with Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Traffic Alert and Exit Warning. Convenience features include electrically operated sliding doors with Easy Open and Easy Close functionality, a power-operated tailgate, keyless entry and start, dark-tinted rear privacy glass, and 17-inch Dundrod alloy wheels.

It comes standard with a 3-year/120,000km manufacturer warranty and a 5-year/100,000km Easy Drive maintenance plan, including a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, with a service interval of 15,000km.
