One of the key highlights of the Indaba was a closer look at the Volkswagen Polo, which continues to play a crucial role in Volkswagen South Africa’s manufacturing operations.
The Kariega plant is responsible for producing all right-hand-drive Volkswagen Polo models sold globally, while it is also the exclusive production facility for the Polo GTI.
During the event, visitors were given access to the Product Development Centre, where new Polo models undergo extensive durability testing before reaching customers.
These tests simulate extreme real-world conditions to ensure the vehicle meets Volkswagen’s global quality standards. Vehicles are subjected to suspension stress testing, repeated operation of door mechanisms and bonnet actuation cycles that simulate thousands of uses.
Additional testing takes place in controlled environments that replicate extreme temperatures to evaluate how materials such as paint and plastics respond to prolonged heat exposure.
The goal of these tests is to identify any potential issues before the vehicles reach customers.
Each Polo is effectively subjected to the equivalent of 100 000 kilometres of driving conditions, completed within a condensed testing period of around 30 weeks. Vehicles are also driven across South Africa in a variety of environments including highways, gravel roads, coastal humidity and high-altitude conditions.
